Can Playing Sports Make Kids Smarter?

March 7, 2021Ryan Tremblay
Can going out to play football instead of studying for one more hour improve a child’s grades in school? Yes, grades depend on how good a child is academically, but to be good academically, you need an active and refreshed mind. Without a healthy and active body, people’s senses become a bit dull, and they will not be able to pay any attention in the classroom. So yes, playing sports can make children smarter.

How Sports help develop your Brain

Most people have this misconception that engaging in physical activities only makes you physically strong. People overlook the fact that playing sports can help develop your brain and improve how it functions scientifically. This is because, according to Dr. James Sallis, a professor at the University of California in San Diego, physical activities help create new neurons in the brain, which helps make a better flow of neurotransmitters in your brain cell. So no matter what age you are, even if it is a small child, physical activities are just as important to everyone.  Engaging in sports activities helps to release endorphins in the brain, which makes your mood better. This is mostly a very effective way of dealing with anxiety and depression. And when you do not have anxiety or depression, you would not have any stress in the classroom, which will help you perform better academically.

Another benefit of sports in kids’ education

You can also apply some concepts of sports in your classroom. One example could be Football/ Soccer. Football helps make your reflexes better and makes you concentrate a lot. Similarly, in a classroom, you can apply the same skills to focus on what the teacher is saying and reply quickly if a question is asked.

Convincing the children

Now that we have established that playing sports does make kids smarter, how do we convince them to play in the first place? A lot of kids don’t seem to have any interest in physical activities these days. This is a growing problem but not unsolvable. Children always dislike it when they feel pressured to do anything. So when kids are pressured by their parents to play a specific sport, they might not like it. Instead, parents should let children play sports of their interest without forcing them. Parents can motivate their children to play sports but not force them.  Some parents feel uncomfortable letting the kids go off on their own, even in their own neighbourhood. Although this concern is understandable, you will have to let the kids have fun on their own eventually. The kids would love to play with other kids in the same neighbourhood. Driving bikes with other kids and playing sports with them will let them have fun. This way, they will surely get encouraged to get involved with more physical activity. If parents still feel uncomfortable like this, they can decide to supervise the kids turn by turn each day. This way, the kids could have fun while someone is supervising them.
